On July 18, 2025, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle officially began its run in Japan. The movie was then released worldwide shortly after and went on to make history. Right now, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle stands as the biggest anime movie release ever worldwide, and at the global box office, it has accumulated a total of $793 million.
While Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is quite clearly the biggest anime movie release ever, One Piece is now prepping its own movie for a 2027 release. It was officially confirmed on One Piece Day 2026, on August 23, that One Piece is getting a God Valley movie in 2027, marking its first canon movie release in its entire history. This canon movie could potentially go on to reach the same heights as Infinity Castle and perhaps even surpass it.
2027 is going to be an absolutely massive year for One Piece. Not only are the fans getting a complete remake, which is being tackled by WIT Studio in collaboration with Netflix, but at the same time, it is also getting a brand-new movie. On One Piece Day 2026, which was held on August 22 and August 23, it was officially announced that the series is getting a brand-new movie. Usually, One Piece releases a new movie every three years, but it's already been four years since the last movie, and fans were perplexed as to why no new release was announced. Finally, we have an announcement for the new movie, and it is going to be the first canon theatrical release of the franchise. One Piece's legendary God Valley Incident, which is perhaps the biggest war in the entire series before the Great Pirate Era, is being brought to life in this new movie, which is set to premiere in Summer 2027 in Japan.
Previously, One Piece movies performed well at the box office globally, but the fact that all the movies were non-canon meant that fans were not too eager to watch them. Canon movies raise expectations to a completely new level, and this was proven by series like Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man, among many others. One Piece deciding to go the movie route for the God Valley Incident certainly makes things far more exciting. What is even more interesting is that Eiichiro Oda is directly involved in this project, which means new content will be added to the God Valley Incident that is going to be canon to the entire story and exclusive to the movie itself.
"Here's the full truth. Garp and Roger teamed up to break apart the Rocks Pirates on God Valley to protect the Celestial Dragons and their slaves. The island of God Valley is no longer drawn on the maps of the world." — Sengoku explains the God Valley propaganda, One Piece Chapter #957
Fans from all over the world will want to check out the upcoming One Piece movie, and it is going to take the popularity of this already massive franchise to a completely new level. Considering that One Piece Film Red almost hit 300 million at the global box office, God Valley, which is significantly bigger, is sure to hit much higher numbers and potentially dethrone Infinity Castle in the process. The task will certainly not be easy, but if there's one franchise that can do it, it is the world's biggest anime franchise — One Piece.
The canonicity of the upcoming One Piece Film: God Valley is incredibly important and something that some fans might be overlooking. Non-canon movies are always great, but they are supplementary to the main story. Oda sometimes reveals main bits of information in these movies that eventually tie into the main story, such as the Figarland family being mentioned in Film Red before it was introduced in the manga, and the correct romanization of Laugh Tale being revealed in Stampede before it was officially revealed in the manga. In the majority, however, these movies are non-canon and do not add anything to the main plotline of One Piece.
There is not enough excitement around them for this reason, and not enough anticipation, because most fans still turn to the manga and anime as the canon source every single week, regardless of the movie. These movies largely exist to give the fans a fun experience to celebrate alongside the anime and manga.
