After the original PlayStation accumulated one of the most impressive libraries of JRPGs of all time, it seems almost impossible that the system's successor could do any better. The PS1's JRPG library was a tough act to follow, but somehow, the PlayStation 2 managed to create one that I believe is far superior.
With any good JRPG, however, comes sequels. If you were lucky, your favorite JRPG managed to get a sequel. If you were really lucky, that sequel was genuinely great, and had the potential to be even better than the first game.
A lot of PS2 JRPGs had some amazing sequels, while a few of them have managed to be superior to the games that preceded them. No matter where they land on the quality scale, if you liked JRPGs back in the day, the PS2 felt like an absolute paradise.
Dark Cloud is still one of the most legitimately unique JRPGs I've ever played, and an easy contender for one of the PS2's greatest games. It successfully combined enjoyable combat with city building and management, a mash-up that developer Level-5 would continue to refine over the years.
There weren't a lot of PS2 JRPGs that felt as fun to play as Dark Cloud back in the day. That is, until Level-5 released a sequel three years later, which was a massive improvement over the original.
Dark Cloud 2 adds a ton of improvements to the original, upgrading the city building to feel much more streamlined and smoother to interact with. On the whole, Dark Cloud 2 is an enormous upgrade over the first game, and is one of those JRPGs that everyone needs to play at least once in their life.
Even if I had a million words to work with, there's no way for me to adequately describe how much Final Fantasy 12 means to me. The operatic story, charming characters and stupendous combat system are just a few of the things that I absolutely love about this game.
