Over the past few weeks, a lot of drama has kicked off over Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's physical release. While it will actually be getting one, Square Enix has informed fans that the entire game won't be on the disc, and an additional online download will be required before you can actually start playing the game. For a lot of physical collectors, you may as well not have a physical in the first place.
Ever since, director Naoki Hamaguchi has attempted to try and explain the decision to have a required download when both Remake and Rebirth didn't need one, claiming that the team didn't want to end up "compromising the quality of the final chapter" to squeeze the game on a disc. Unsurprisingly, that excuse didn't fly either.
Now, we seemingly have a more technical reason as to why not all of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is going to be on the disc, and that's because it's probably going to be absolutely massive.
In a new interview with VGC, Hamaguchi is asked whether the game will be bigger than the download from the two discs that were required for Rebirth, since it's going to be a bigger game. In response, Hamaguchi gave us a ballpark figure of what he thinks the file size is probably going to be, and it's a chonker.
"Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game," says Hamaguchi. "I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent."
He goes on to explain that even though we're looking at a 200GB game, the decision to still have a physical disc that requires a download was still "really important" to them. Unfortunately, requiring a digital download doesn't automatically make it a physical collector's dream, as you're still beholden to online connections in order to play. Still, at least we have a technical reason now, as well as a creative one.
