Resident Evil has never really pulled its punches when it comes to showing the horrible things that can and will happen to people — and our protagonists will, indeed, react to the awful happenings. Yet, when going through all the protagonists the series has had, many veteran fans tend to remember Leon S. Kennedy for many other things before they remember his heart.
Leon, at this point, has become the face of the franchise, best known for his funny one-liners and constant sass, but he's also got a soft side that we see way more than we remember. In fact, Leon is incredibly emotionally vulnerable, and he doesn't hide what he's feeling, making him a warm protagonist we can resonate with.
While he didn't hesitate to show emotion in the original games, the remakes tend to tug on his heartstrings a little harder, making him a lot more vulnerable than we remember him being. It brings a humanity that we desperately need in a world of the cruel and the undead, and it makes him a hero with a golden heart.
And thankfully, he never loses that heart.
While it initially seems heartless for Leon to open fire on Emily after she's transformed in Resident Evil Requiem, it's very clear that he's bothered the entire time, especially as Grace continues to scream and cry for him to stop. The look on his face says it all, even when he has to be the one to make the hard decision.
And during the entire exchange, while we don't see Leon's face once he starts to fire, we don't hear him say a word. At that moment, we don't have to be in his thoughts or hear his opinions through angsty dialogue; we know exactly what he's feeling, Grace just so happens to be the one vocalising it.
The scene is just devastating, and it's clear that it's one that will be added to Leon's mental vault for haunted memories of people he couldn't save.
