As if we needed another reason to love Remedy, Control Resonant takes a chance to call out generative AI slop through one of its collectibles.
Over the past year or so, generative AI has sadly become a hot topic in pretty much every medium, including video games. It feels like we can’t go one week without hearing about some triple-A game that’s used AI in some way, and then has to explain itself or backtrack once everyone catches wind and pushes back.
Thankfully, while there are a lot of big name studios using generative AI right now (far more than you might think, according to some reports), there are plenty who are still avoiding it. That includes Remedy, who confirmed some time ago that Control Resonant was made without AI, something that’s made crystal clear in one of the game’s collectibles.
As pointed out by Twitter user sophiekeen, Control Resonant includes a collectible that sees a character reacting to someone’s movie script, called The Great Copy Battle. The poorly-written script is about multiple copies of a person and seems to be somewhat of a romance, judging by the cringe-inducing dialogue.
At the bottom of that script is a reaction from whatever poor friend had to read it over. They clearly aren’t a fan of it, but they do at least appreciate that it’s a “display of actual human incompetence instead of some genAI bulls**t”. It brings me hope that even in a world where literal paranormal threats exist, plenty of people still hate AI.
If that doesn’t make it clear how most of the developers at Remedy feel about the use of generative AI in game development, I don’t know what will. It’s especially refreshing coming from a studio like Remedy that so often gives us bizarre, human, and clearly passionately-made games like Control and Alan Wake.
That being said, there is a bit of irony in it all. During a recent Remedy earnings briefing, interim CEO Markus Mäki said that there is a “varied interest” in investigating AI tools in development and seeing if there’s anything that can add “player value” that the teams want to use. It’s not the most damning statement on AI, but I hope Resonant is a sign that Remedy is still against it.
