If you've seen a few of my past lists pop up in your discovery feed or somewhere, you're probably rolling your eyes again or just getting ready to be amused by the title of today's one. Well, the joke's on you because this open-world list actually means a dime to me, okay. See, even though I slightly ridicule this genre for being a mess, I can't deny how much richness it has in some select titles, but the one element that still gets overlooked despite its popularity is the music.
Music is perhaps one of the core pillars of what makes an amazing game; it is the backbone of an action game and a nostalgic novelty for people who grew up with the PS2. And it rings all the same for critically acclaimed games in the open world category, so join me in finding out the games that deliver on this aspect wholeheartedly with their range of masterful music composition and soundtracks.
Although not a true open-world experience in execution, we've mentioned NieR: Automata on this list as a technical exception.
We're kicking it off with a game that recently had a fantastic showing at Gamescom, with its remastered release and the unveiling of a brand-new expansion coming sometime next year. The Witcher 3 is undoubtedly the golden goose of CDPR at this point; there's certainly not a single doubt about that. You can have your opinions on the combat, but the writing and general quest design are fondly remembered by many as one of the most extraordinary things to come out of this third entry.
More importantly, the soundtrack gives it a distinct personality. From the haunting melodies of Velen to the energetic folk-inspired tracks of Skellige, the music of TW3 should easily be a trademark feature alongside the other notable elements. Heck, some of my favorite moments with the game aren't even tied to major quests; they're simply moments where I'm just riding Roach through the countryside with the music playing.
I'm not afraid to go back-to-back here with glazing CDPR, since with a masterful sound engineer like Marcin Przybyłowic once again leading the charge alongside P. T. Adamczyk and Paul Leonard-Morgan, Cyberpunk 2077's soundtrack really is a thing of beauty. Look, I can argue that some of the radio station songs are a bit, for lack of a better term, too overly weird. But on the flip side, you have absolute bangers from cult-favorite artists like HEALTH and Grimes, which balance those misses out.
And honestly, even the game's original score has so much indefinite sauce. My Spotify Wrapped a couple of years back had Olga Jankowska's rendition of Never Fade Away and Dawid Podsiadło's Phantom Liberty in the top 5; both of which had me in a chokehold for a whole month with the post-game depression. With another sandbox-focused game that we all know of coming up next, CP2077 had an all-rounder banger soundtrack list, and we're not even at the end here.
