While The Lord of the Rings original trilogy movies and books are some of the most highly regarded and influential works of all time, its video games rarely meet the mark. Tales of the Shire, War in the North, and Gollum were all disappointments to many fans. I share the frustration of being in love with the world of Middle-earth, and yet the best game for it was Return of the King which was released in 2003 alongside the movie.
So, I turned to other games to fill the void. While none of these games are set in Middle-earth, they all give me the same feelings that LotR does, and they're like LotR in the ways that matter. In a lot of respects, they succeed at the themes of LotR far more effectively than most LotR games that have come out, especially in recent years.
To diversify the picks, these titles are from a range of series and genres, and some may have as many differences to the Lord of the Rings series as similarities.
The War of the Ring was far larger than the movies depicted, and Tolkien's appendices detail other conflicts that occurred further north. The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is an attempt at depicting some of these events, though the game isn't canon. It's set during the events of the original trilogy and explores regions and characters that the movies only mention, while also maintaining the familiar atmosphere of Tolkien’s world.
Its three-player co-op also makes the journey especially enjoyable with friends, allowing each character to bring different abilities into battle. While the story itself isn't the strongest part of the game, sometimes you just want to exist in a certain world, and War in the North lets you do just that.
Final Fantasy X takes place on a series of tropical islands and follows a teenage sports player. This setup is about as far from LotR as you can get, but the story escalates in a dramatic fashion and turns into a personal fight against fate and cycles of abuse and rebirth. The core group of characters work together to overcome these odds to save their home and each other, and tragedy follows them each in turn.
Despite being released in 2001, Final Fantasy X is still very playable and has a remaster on PC, though some may prefer to play the original. No matter how much time passes, its themes of friendship, loss, and the struggle against forces so much bigger than oneself remain timeless.
