Bears (or otherwise referred to as Bjorns) in Valheim are a type of hostile wildlife that you'll typically find in Dark Forest biomes. Unlike boars in Meadows, bears are more dangerous to fight. Not only do they have high health, but they also hit very hard, often capable of taking players down in two or three hits depending on their armor and how much max HP they have. Still, hunting bears in Valheim is well worth the effort, as they drop the materials needed to craft an excellent early-game armor set and a pair of fist weapons.
The spawn rates for bears are fairly low, though in my experience, they're usually between the borders of a Dark Forest and a Meadows biome. There have been a few occasions where I encountered bears deep inside a Dark Forest, though, so be warned.
If you find yourself face to face with a bear, your best option is to use fire. Holding a torch will cause them to panic, reducing their attack frequency and giving you more opportunities to land a few hits. Smacking bears with a torch causes them to burn and run around in fear, making this a very safe way to hunt a bear in melee range.
Using a bow with flaming arrows is arguably safer, as you can continuously kite a bear while setting it on fire. However, since bears are resistant against Pierce damage (the damage type that the vast majority of arrows do), you'll be missing out on a lot of damage, and your arrows will lose plenty of their value as well. This shouldn't be an issue if you have a decent stockpile of arrows to burn through, but it's still worth taking note of.
If you're planning on fighting bears with a torch, bring multiple torches. Also, if you can bait a bear into a lower elevation, you can stand on top of it and attack from there.
Killing a bear will drop meat, hides, paws, and if you're lucky, a Bear Trophy. All of these can be used to craft the Bear Armor Set. For that, you'll need the following resources:
