Steam users can claim the multiplayer arcade game Crystal Crisis for free until September 21. The game normally costs around $20 USD and has about 80% positive Steam reviews at the time of writing, although the number of reviews is limited.
Crystal Crisis is a unique arcade game that blends color-matching puzzles with 1v1 fighting. Unlike most other fighting games, Crystal Crisis doesn't require players to perform combos or dodge their rivals' moves. Instead, it asks them to solve a Tetris-like puzzle and accumulate points that can then be converted into powerful moves to knock out their opponents.
A brand-new free-to-keep promotion on Steam lets users claim Crystal Crisis at no cost, but they only have until September 21 at 11:59 PM to grab it. Developer Nicalis, Inc. says, "Crystal Crisis is presented like a fighting game, but players attack by arranging falling crystals and clearing them from the screen." One of the most interesting features in Crystal Crisis is its "all-star" roster. Players might recognize some of its fighters, such as Astro Boy and Black Jack, from other franchises and IPs.
Multiplayer game modes in Crystal Crisis support both online and split-screen play. That said, the game also allows for solo adventures, pitting players against the CPU if they don’t have any friends to invite to the brawl. Even better, Crystal Crisis features a story mode that can keep players engaged for multiple hours, something that many PvP fighting games actually lack. The developer also says each character features their own unique stage and song, while voice-acted lines help make the combat more engaging.
Developer Nicalis has another retro-style fighting game on Steam called Blade Strangers that also has positive reviews. However, the studio’s most well-known release is its co-developed 2014 game, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. The game has over 160,000 reviews on Valve’s storefront, with most of them being positive, giving it an Overwhelmingly Positive rating. For those wondering, The Binding of Isaac is a 2D roguelike game like Brotato, and it features RPG elements.
Upcoming free-to-keep promotions on Steam don’t look that promising for the rest of September. SteamDB currently lists no other games planned to receive the 100% discount treatment for the rest of the month. That said, players can currently claim the 2D retro platformer Hayfever at no cost. The game used to be a paid title, but it recently dropped its price tag and went free-to-play. There are also the Epic Games Store’s weekly freebies that PC users can benefit from. Right now, the storefront is giving away two titles: Astral Ascent and Luftrausers. Once these promotions end on September 17, Epic Games Store users will also be able to claim Mindcop and Shogun Showdown.
