Masashi Kishimoto introduced us to Konoha, also known as the Hidden Leaf Village, in the very first chapter of Naruto, which was released on September 21, 1999, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #34. The history of this village was expanded upon significantly as the original story reached its conclusion over the next two decades.
In the Boruto era, Konoha's lore is expanded even further, but at the same time, it faces far bigger dangers than it ever did. The prologue of the Boruto series, which was unveiled to us on May 9, 2016, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #23, which carried the very first chapter of the new sequel series, showed us the grim fate that the village is about to face. Konohagakure was built by Hashirama and Madara, and their legacy was carried by several Hokage over the years, including the Seventh Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki. Now this village faces certain destruction, and it is time for fans to bid farewell to Konoha as we know it. When Konoha does return eventually, it will be far different than ever before and, in many ways, unrecognizable.
The prologue of the Boruto series, which was unveiled on May 9, 2016, in Boruto Chapter 1, carries immense significance. Not only did this prologue give us a look at Boruto's ultimate battle against Kawaki and introduce us to the powers of Karma, but at the same time, it also showed a completely destroyed Konoha to us for the very first time. Konoha facing destruction is not uncommon. In the Konoha Crush arc, Orochimaru tried to destroy the village and certainly caused some damage. In the Pain's Assault arc, the village faced near annihilation at the hands of the leader of the Akatsuki, but it was always saved at the end of the day.

What happens in Boruto is completely different. As is clear in the prologue of the Boruto Series, Konoha is utterly destroyed, and on top of that, the Age of Shinobi has come to an end as well. This was confirmed directly by both Boruto Uzumaki and Kawaki to us. The Seventh Hokage remains sealed at this time, and Boruto declares himself to be the last Shinobi. Whether all the other characters in the story have died or are incapacitated in some way or form doesn't matter. What we know for a fact is that Konoha, as we know it, doesn't exist at this point in time, and the story is still building towards that. The only one who can save the world from this cruel and grim fate that Kawaki has led it to is the Child of Hope, Boruto Uzumaki, the protagonist of the series and the son of the former protagonist Naruto Uzumaki.
Boruto: I guess this was the only possible outcome.
