There have always been rumours and bits of speculation over the years about whether Microsoft might be interested in selling off the Xbox brand — particularly during challenging times for the company's gaming division — and we've heard quite a lot of chatter about this in recent times since Asha Sharma took the role as head of Xbox.
Sharma was actually asked about this directly in a new interview with The New York Times, and her response is certainly comforting to say the least, with the Xbox CEO stating that the brand isn't for sale whatsoever.
She also then says that they'll do "whatever it takes" to achieve the kind of success they're hoping for:
“Xbox is not for sale,” Sharma said. “We will do whatever it takes to set the company up for success, and we will look at the right partnerships, the right operating model and everything needed to achieve that.”
Apparently, Microsoft executives mentioned to The New York Times that there's always speculation about a potential Xbox sale and yet it never happens, and Sharma herself advised that there's a "long way to go with Microsoft" and they're taking a "long-term view".
So, even though Microsoft boss Satya Nadella caused a little bit of nervousness amongst Xbox fans the other day with his comments about Xbox needing "the right sustainable business model" and to get back to growth this fiscal year, there are no indications that the company actually wants to get out of the platform business as things stand.
In fact, it seems very much the opposite - they're going big on the platform side of things and trying to embrace exclusives and console features all over again, not to mention the upcoming arrival of the Project Helix console.
Don't panic, in other words! We're certainly hoping Xbox will be around for many years (and decades!) to come.
