I’ve seen a lot regarding the Total War series floating around, from huge-scale battles online to hearing friends chant around their sprawling battlefield campaigns, and the carnage unleashed upon the world.
However, from the outside, looking in, I have to admit it looks a little overwhelming. Hundreds of troops, huge areas, with danger all around, tactical buildings, choke points, high ground, and battle formations. Even thinking about it now, I struggle to get my head around it all.
So when Dualshockers were invited to the Sega Summer Showcase over in Los Angeles, and I heard that Total War: Warhammer 40,000 was going to be shown off, I thought, time to rip off the band-aid and get stuck in. And honestly, what I found surprised me! While it was definitely as complicated as I imagined, it was surprisingly approachable, and I found myself having way more fun than I had expected.
Before getting into the actual gameplay, I have to say, the cutscenes that led me into the opening segments of the demo were rather spectacular.
In true Warhammer fashion, we get a close look at the Ultramarines in all their glory, cutting through hordes of Orcs and blasting apart crudely put-together machines of destruction, all the while glorious spaceships hang in the sky above, sending down lasers of pure annihilation, turning the battlefield into cinders. All in all, it looks fantastic and really gets you into the mood.
And honestly, it shows that Warhammer 40,000 is a perfect fit for the Total War franchise. Commanding a tight-knit pack of rage-fuelled warriors as they cut through hordes of enemies is as thrilling and awe-inspiring as you can imagine!
I played through 2 unique segments of the game: first a demo that teaches the ins and outs of the gameplay, and then a short snippet of a story mission that will happen sometime during the main game.
