Minh 'Gooseman' Le and Jess Cliff changed shooters forever in 1999, thanks to a little mod for Half-Life. You may have heard of it; it's called Counter-Strike. As a result of its success, Le went on to work with Valve for several years. Between turning his attention to Day of Defeat: Source and eventually helping bring Rust to life, Le recalls his time in Gabe Newell's presence, and it includes a surprising amount of singing.

In a new interview with YouTuber 'Indie Game Joe,' Le takes a trip down memory lane. Diving into his years at Valve, he says that "when we started working there, it was really incredible. It was my first time working in the game industry." Adding that he was surrounded by "some of the best talent" around, Le likens it to "being in a university, but you got paid to make games."

He would eventually depart from Valve in 2006, expressing that he felt like Valve wasn't "motivated to reinvent" Counter-Strike at the time. Despite this, Le has nothing but praise for working with Gabe Newell. Noting his "eccentric" and "curious" demeanor, he remembers how Newell "got into Mongolian throat singing […] he got really fascinated with this concept […] he was doing it throughout the office."

As Newell's obsession with it grew, Le says that Valve employees would often get "annoyed" over the course of "five months," which he believes was an "interesting time" for the company. Alongside this new talent, Newell began collecting "big ass" swords and axes before going on to get into the art of knife crafting.

Newell's eccentric interests may have made for some unusual office stories, but Le's memories also highlight the unconventional environment that surrounded Valve during Counter-Strike's formative years.

These days, Le is working on Alpha Response, an all-new tactical shooter that's cut from the same cloth as Ready or Not. In our Alpha Response interview, Le talks about respecting the player's time, sharing that "if someone plays our game for maybe ten hours and then puts it away, that's a success. I don't want people to play for 100 hours."
