Gamescom was so busy over the past few days that a major upcoming Xbox title actually got lost in the shuffle! We're talking about State of Decay 3, which is now set to release in 2027 for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC and PS5.
The studio behind the game (Undead Labs) has been hosting various Alpha playtests over the past few months, and they're now planning for a Closed Beta before the end of 2026, with signups available on the State of Decay website.
Here's a bit more about what's coming for State of Decay 3 later this year:
Kevin Patzelt, Creative Director: “We’re going to be expanding our alpha and then closed beta to more players over time, this is our largest map ever and with untethered multiplayer, we really need to take the opportunities to stress-test and fine-tune. If you don’t get access right away, rest assured there will be more opportunities throughout the year for players familiar and brand new to the series.”
The sad part is that Undead Labs will soon no longer be an Xbox first-party studio, with Microsoft announcing back in July that they're in the process of being sold off. SoD 3 is still clearly targeting a launch on Xbox consoles though, and the new Xbox Wire blog confirms it'll still be an Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere title.
It sounds like a lot more people will be able to get hands-on with State of Decay 3 in the very near future, and here's hoping the game will be able to continue evolving as a result of their feedback. 2027 might seem like a long way away, but we could be looking at a full release for this one in less than a year's time!
