The Legend of Zelda has always had its roots in the open world sphere of gaming, dating all the way back to its debut title on the NES, opting for a focus on exploration to give players the greatest sense of adventure — but recent titles have shown just how impactful the experience is when this exploration is brought to the forefront. Breath of the Wild is the perfect example of this, and as a result, it remains the best game for players wanting to go on an adventure in its purest form.

In fact, I'd argue that Breath of the Wild has the best exploration in the whole Zelda franchise, and in all honestly, even in open world gaming as a whole.

With just how revolutionary it was to the open world approach, it's no wonder that Breath of the Wild is the highest-scored open world game on OpenCritic, often referred to as one of the best open worlds of all time. And the thing with this version of Hyrule is that the world is equal parts rich and alive, but vast and empty.

It's a dynamic that works beautifully, and has created the best exploration that we'll probably ever see in gaming.

It's tempting for developers to pack every corner of their map with various quests, collectibles, and other content, but that's not the exact formula that Breath of the Wild follows. In fact, there are several areas of the map that you're exploring that don't have anything interesting going on in them at all, it's just empty space.

That being said, the empty space isn't all-encompassing, and it isn't completely overriding what does exist on the map. The empty space is intentional, and serves as a moment to breathe in between key locations on your adventure. It's the intentional white space left in designs, just in an open world.

This intentional emptiness is also reflective of our own world, the same way we have to traverse through any emptiness in order to get to our desired location. Reflective of exploring in reality, Breath of the Wild takes the same approach, and because of it, the empty space adds a good amount of overall depth to the game and its world.
