Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy marks a dramatic shift for Asobo Studio's series. Rather than continuing Amicia and Hugo's story after A Plague Tale: Requiem, it jumps back in time and puts Sophia in the starring role, with a more action-oriented style of play and a new setting steeped in Greek mythology.
At Gamescom 2026, Game Rant sat down with Carol-Ann Bañuls, lead game writer at Asobo Studio, and Valérian Robert, lead level designer, to talk about making Sophia the protagonist, changing the basic Plague Tale formula, designing a different kind of world around her abilities, and how Resonance expands the mythology of the Macula.

Q: How did the Greek mythology stuff end up in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy? What was the conversation surrounding that?
Carol-Ann Bañuls: I think we wanted to expand the universe of A Plague Tale while keeping the DNA of it. So you still get the emotional storytelling, but we have new gameplay, new combat, and a new island setting. But yeah, it's different, but there is still plague in it.
Valérian Robert: We wanted to explore different things, like the combat system. A lot of people on the team wanted to explore this type of gameplay. We didn't want to do another Plague Tale that was really the same as Requiem, so we wanted to explore different things.
Q: What makes Resonance a Plague Tale game? What does it carry over from the first two games?
Bañuls: The emotional storytelling — the fact that the main character is Sophia. She's definitely linked to the story. It also brings back the stealth gameplay mechanic from Requiem.
