The Team Behind PixelJunk Is Partly to Thank for Ace Combat 8's Brilliant Cloud Tech

Today sees the official launch of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, the latest entry in Bandai Namco's wonderful jet fighter action series.

There are many things to love about the new game, including an anime-like story, highly polished gameplay, and an impressively varied campaign. Another area in which it shines is its visuals, with its skyboxes and clouds looking particularly good.

Developer Bandai Namco Aces built all-new technology called Cloudly just for that purpose, and it shows; the volumetric cloud formations look convincingly realistic.

It turns out, however, that Aces wasn't the only team working on the tech. Q-Games, a long-established Japanese studio, has announced its involvement with AC8 in a new post on social media:

Best known as the developer behind the PixelJunk games, Kyoto-based Q-Games has said it "worked on the R&D" of Cloudly.

Indeed, the team is listed in the game's end credits, with a number of names attached to the studio's contributions to AC8.

Q-Games is one of many external teams that worked on the game, in fact. While Aces is the lead developer, there are multiple support studios that helped out with all aspects of production, including performance capture, cinematics, lighting, character and environment modelling, and more.
