Aniimo Review: An Impressive MMORPG Creature Collector

Aniimo is finally here after many tests and betas. While some things have changed since then, a majority of the game is still the same, not that much needed to change in the first place. It isn't a perfect game, but what's on offer even on day one is pretty astonishing.

I've played a lot of Aniimo in the last few months and am really looking forward to jumping in on release as well, but I was hoping some issues would be more ironed out. With a decent story, great gameplay, and a very packed schedule, Aniimo has definitely earned its spot in my personal game rotation.

This interesting RPG is a bit different from what you might be expecting. Players will definitely have plenty of ways to interact with the world and each other, even if, in some cases, those interactions are limited in very annoying ways.

In terms of genre, Aniimo is described as an action RPG MMO, and there's a specific reason I use that order for this description. The game primarily focuses on your individual progression through the story without others, rather than being constantly surrounded by various players on a server.

You play through the story as your own character and only interact with other people when you visit certain areas or invite them to join you. Beyond that, you'll virtually never interact with another real person out in your world. We'll touch a bit more on that later, but the main focus of the game is the story.

As a winner of some contest to visit Idyll, the world of Aniimo, you travel there hoping to see some amazing things. One thing leads to another, and now you're attempting to save Idyll from some unseen threat along with the help of people from the Polaris Institute. The story has plenty of characters to get to know, but focuses on the legendary Aniimo of the starting island, Irisalis.

Working your way up through the Institute's rankings by completing missions, you'll catch tons of Aniimo, battle NPC trainers, and take on all kinds of Alpha Aniimo. Unlike other creature collectors, the game isn't turn-based and instead relies on some action-heavy combat that offers a good bit of depth.
