In the world of ninja, wars have been a constant, and the entire history of the shinobi kind has been shaped by wars of various types. Before the establishment of the shinobi villages, numerous clans existed in a time period known as the Warring States Era. However, even before that, wars were quite common in the world established by Masashi Kishimoto.
Following the establishment of ninja villages, four massive Shinobi World Wars broke out, each bigger than the previous one. Now, in the Boruto era, despite the shinobi villages being closer to each other than ever before, the Fifth Shinobi World War is looming and is set to begin before the conclusion of the story, set up by both Mikio Ikemoto and Masashi Kishimoto.
The last major war in the Naruto franchise was the Fourth Shinobi World War, which officially began with Gaara's speech in Naruto chapter 516, which was released on November 29, 2010, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 50. This war officially kickstarted what was the most important stretch of the Naruto series around 16 years ago, and quite a lot of time has passed since then. Naruto officially ended its run in 2014, and since then, its sequel has begun and has now entered its most important stages. While the ninja villages have officially been integrated properly in the Boruto era, the external threats that the Ninja World faces in general could easily lead to a Fifth Shinobi World War.

In fact, in the very prologue of the Boruto series, which was released on May 9, 2016, we saw Konoha being utterly demolished. Along with it, it was confirmed by both Kawaki and Boruto Uzumaki that the age of ninjas was over, meaning that, alongside Konoha, all the other ninja villages were also destroyed. This essentially marks the end of the era of ninjas and confirms to us that the shinobi faced a bigger threat than that of Madara Uchiha and Kaguya Otsutsuki. In other words, even the collective strength of all the ninja villagers was not enough to stop the threat that they faced, which in turn goes to show that this threat was big enough to essentially be classified as the Fifth Shinobi World War.
