As is the case with every new Magic: The Gathering set, the new and returning mechanics can make or break the playability of the new cards. Wizards of the Coast rarely gets it totally wrong, and some mechanics end up being divisive, but by and large, Reality Fracture is trending positively with fans, even if one mechanic in particular has players undecided on whether it's overpowered or not.
So, with the Reality Fracture hype train well and truly running at full steam, let's take you through all the new and returning mechanics you need to be aware of come prerelease.
There's only one major new mechanic in Reality Fracture from a gameplay point of view, but we're also going to cover the pack mechanic again, just so everyone has a complete understanding of how Reality Fracture packs will work and why you will always receive two versions of the same character.
It's Amass, but for a Jace Planeswalker! This is the mechanic that has the community divided, and I can see why. There are a lot of cards already revealed that lean heavily into this Empower mechanic, and as we've already hinted, it works exactly like Amass.
Whenever you cast a spell with Empower Jace (X), you create a blue token Jace Planeswalker with X loyalty counters that has two abilities: -1 to Surveil 1, and -3 to draw a card.
If you already control a Jace Planeswalker token, you add the Empower Jace number to its counters. Some spells also give Planeswalkers an additional ability, and your Jace token gets those abilities too, as long as the enchantment that grants them is still in play.
It's going to dominate Prerelease and Limited formats, but generally speaking, Empower Jace doesn't yet feel like it's going to be a huge problem for Standard or Commander, although we expect the Multiverse Reforged precon deck to heavily feature the spell.
Echoed Pairs are not a gameplay mechanic, but instead the term used to describe the cards that effectively feature a character in both their Multiverse and Echoverse forms. There are 15 pairs in total, and anytime they appear in packs, you are guaranteed to receive both cards, never just one, and this prevents certain halves of pairs from being perceived as rarer than their counterpart.
