A lot of big video game franchises have been celebrating significant milestones this year. Sonic the Hedgehog is one of those franchises, as 2026 marks 35 years since the blue blur’s first game launched on the Sega Genesis. To celebrate, Sega has teamed up with several unique brands, including Yoyoyo, to create a Sonic sculpture that only a few fans will ever have the opportunity to own.
The porcelain Infinite Blue Sonic sculpture will only ever make it into the hands of a few select fans for a couple of reasons. The first is only 50 of these sculptures have been made, and there are no plans to make any more. The second is, partly due to how scarce they are, each sculpture costs 1 million yen. That’s $6,341.
The first five sculptures will be available to buy on a first-come, first-served basis at the Across Generations Sonic exhibition taking place in Ikebukuro, Japan this weekend. The remaining 45 will then be available online, although it will be a lottery system that determines who has the chance to hand over more than $6,000 for them to keep the process as fair as possible.
It isn’t just the fact that these sculptures will be limited to 50 pieces that makes them so valuable. It’s the various processes and prestigious brands that have come together to create them, too. As Japanese site Gamer explains, the blue used to give Sonic his signature look for these sculptures is gosu, an underglaze used in Japanese ceramics that apparently never fades.
That’s one of the reasons why this sculpture has been dubbed Infinite Blue. The other is the symbol Sonic’s legs are making. The symbol for infinity, which is the same as the one his legs make when he runs fast in 2D games and animated shows, hence why this collab is so fitting.
Two kilns have combined to help create the Infinite Blue Sonic sculpture, both of which have been around since the birth of Japanese porcelain hundreds of years ago. From perfecting the design to figuring out how to make Sonic look just right after the sculptures are fired in the kiln, the process took eight months.
Not only did perfecting the design take months, but since every single sculpture is handcrafted and hand-painted, it takes a single person an entire day to make just one of them, maybe two. All of that comes together to explain not only why just 50 of these sculptures have been made, but more importantly, why it’s going to cost you more than $6,000 to get one.
This is the second out-there statue Sega has shown off to celebrate Sonic turning 35. Earlier this year, it unveiled a Sonic statue with a Chaos Emerald in its chest, claiming that the emerald was imbued with the hedgehog’s actual DNA.
