Onimusha: Way Of The Sword's Physical Xbox Release Is Already Sold Out

Lovers of physical games were finally given some good news last week when Xbox started to roll out its disc-to-digital initiative. In more good news, new release, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is disc-to-digital compatible. The bad news is you’re going to have trouble finding a physical copy of the new game on Xbox.

Xbox didn’t provide a list of compatible games when it opened its disc-to-digital feature up to Insiders last week. It just confirmed that it works with thousands of physical games. With that, the Xbox community got to work. XCT.live, a site tracking which games are compatible, has already checked 1,879 games, and Way of the Sword is confirmed to be one of the 1,391 games that lets you redeem its digital license if you own a physical copy.

A big win for Onimusha fans who own a physical Xbox Series X|S copy of the latest entry in the series, and it sounds like that might be a few of you, with Way of the Sword selling one million copies on release day. It’s not great news for those who didn’t buy a copy right away, as physical Xbox copies of the new game are already impossible to find.

The Xbox version of Way of the Sword is currently sold out at all major online retailers in the US, with just the digital code left in stock since that can’t sell out. A check in the win column for digital games, but also one in the lose column, as physical copies of Xbox games now come with a digital copy, too, or at least some of them will.

Even though physical copies of the new Onimusha are still in stock on other platforms, this is the latest in a string of sellouts proving demand for physical versions of new games remains high. It’s the second Capcom title in 2026 alone to prove it, as physical copies of Resident Evil Requiem quickly sold out across all platforms earlier this year.

Requiem followed in the footsteps of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, as 2025’s Game of the Year also struggled to keep up with physical demand. Just last week, Mortal Shell 2’s Revered Edition, a PS5-exclusive physical release, was being resold for more than $300 by scalpers, as that limited edition version of the game is not only sold out, but the publisher suggested it might never be restocked.

There is an argument to be made here that publishers are producing fewer copies of physical games as disc production winds down, and that's the real reason this keeps happening. If that’s the case, then Capcom, in particular, needs to reassess how many physical copies of its games it produces. This is the second time this has happened to the studio in the same year. Studios might also want to up the number of physical Xbox games they produce. Not only has Xbox still not committed to the same all-digital future as PlayStation, but the disc-to-digital program means physical copies of new Xbox games are now more appealing than they have been in years.
