The JRPG genre is filled with amazing games, including some genuinely obscure hidden gems. Whether you're talking about the big names like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, or Persona, or something much more niche like Suikoden, JRPGs have something for everyone. The PS3 had dozens upon dozens of great JRPGs, many of them famous names from enduring franchises.
Some of the greatest JRPG games come from developers that are steeped in the JRPG tradition, while every so often you get an upstart newcomer producing a sensational game like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. These games, though, aren't those titles — they're obscure, little-known PS3 JRPGs from otherwise famous developers that you probably haven't already played.
Neverland is a developer that's well known within its niche as the creator behind the Lufia and Rune Factory series. It normally makes RPGs and simulation/action RPGs, so it isn't at all weird to see them make a JRPG. What is pretty weird is how obscure this particular entry ended up being. The Rune Factory franchise absolutely had a following and was a real genre pioneer, mixing life-sim elements with RPG dungeon crawling.
Previous entries into the franchise were much more commercially successful and popular than Tides of Destiny. It doesn't seem like a bad game either: it's an unusual combination of action RPG combat, farming, relationship simulation, and exploration. There's also a giant sea monster that raises sunken islands. What more could you ask for?
Unfortunately, it was released near the end of Neverland's existence, and although it still has a cult following, it alienated some of the franchise's core fanbase due to departures from the established gameplay loops. Today, its fans call it an underrated gem, but most people still haven't heard of it.
Media Vision was one of the first developers making games for the PlayStation, and it's developed multiple entries in the Wild Arms franchise. It's also responsible for multiple Valkyria Chronicles games, along with multiple Digimon games, including Digimon Story: Time Stranger.
The studio is no stranger to JRPGs, as its back catalog can attest. It's even made a wonderfully weird Wizard of Oz JRPG for the Nintendo DS called The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road. Shining Resonance, though, was a much more typical JRPG based on Sega's long-running Shining franchise.
The Shining franchise has many, many games, split across strategy titles, dungeon crawlers, and action role-playing games. Shining Resonance was a PS3-exclusive action JRPG that ended up being a pretty obscure entry in the franchise. It was initially Japan-only and almost didn't make it out: There was a four-year gap between its release and its remastering, expansion, and rerelease for the PlayStation 4, Switch, PC, and Xbox One. No wonder it's not exactly a global phenomenon.
