After President Trump's steep tariffs on goods entering the US were deemed illegal, any company affected by the added cost of doing business became entitled to a refund. Nintendo was one of these companies, along with other gaming giants.
However, consumers have started to make the case that they should be entitled to these refunds, too. They argue that the cost was passed down to them, with price tags rising during this time. Nintendo is one of many companies refusing to pass those refunds on to those who purchased Nintendo goods during the tariff fiasco, stating that they "received exactly what they bargained and paid for".
Now, Nintendo is trying to extend an olive branch to the community. Rather than give them refunds, Nintendo is instead rolling out a "customer appreciation sale". Nintendo of America describes this as one of its "largest promotions ever", with discounts on games, DLC, accessories, and more.
The customer appreciation sale will run for a little over a week and kicks off this Sunday. During this time, we're told we can expect digital games and bundles to be discounted by 30%, with other discounts on Nintendo Switch accessories, physical games, amiibo, and apparel. The sale will include goods sold through the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store and select retailers.
"The Customer Appreciation Sale is our way of saying thank you to Nintendo players for their continued support and is made possible in part by tariff-related refunds," the announcement reads. "While Nintendo absorbed most tariff-related costs, the refunds helped make promotions like this one possible."
Now, this is clearly Nintendo's way of trying to appease its community, while refusing to budge on the argument that customers are not entitled to any of the tariff refunds it has received. Nintendo's point is that the tariffs were not necessarily passed on to the consumer, and any price hikes around this time were unrelated. Of course, there are indeed other market conditions it could point to, like the ongoing RAM crisis.
There are two ways you can look at this. One is that our reward for toughing out the tariffs is the opportunity to give Nintendo more money. The less cynical angle here is that we can use the sale to buy stuff we planned on picking up anyway. I suppose we'll just have to see what these deals look like once the sale is live.
