An anime website that was active for 15 years has now disappeared from the internet, becoming the latest major piracy platform to shut down. After the fall of HiAnime and AnimeKai, and now this website, it is clear that the landscape of anime streaming is changing.
TorrentFreak reports the shutdown of the Spanish-language anime piracy website AnimeFLV.net, which had been operating for around 15 years. This development is another nail in the coffin of anime piracy websites, and it strongly demonstrates that the anime piracy landscape is changing drastically. As AnimeFLV.net went defunct, it effectively ended its role as one of the largest illegal anime streaming platforms despite its catalog remaining online. While the anime directory remains, site visitors can no longer play videos. At the time of writing this article, AnimeFLV’s video player contains no sources, indicating that the site is no longer operational. Visitors can still browse the list of available videos, but when they press the play button, they are met with an “Actualmente no hay videos” message, which translates to “There are currently no videos.”
As mentioned earlier, the disappearance of AnimeFLV.net isn’t a one-off incident. Its shutdown follows the closures of HiAnime and AnimeKai, continuing a growing wave of piracy site shutdowns. No piracy watchdogs have publicly claimed responsibility for AnimeFLV.net’s shutdown, and the site's operators have thus far kept mum on the shutdown. Although the crackdown on illegal anime sites is a common denominator between HiAnime and AnimeFLV.net, the two platforms differ in how their operators responded to the pressure and, ultimately, their shutdowns. In July 2026, TorrentFreak reported that Vietnamese authorities had arrested seven individuals allegedly linked to the former piracy website HiAnime. When the platform initially went dark in March 2026, a message posted on its homepage announced its closure. However, HiAnime’s Discord team later told users that the website would return and urged them not to believe unverified reports about its shutdown.
Around 80 days later, in June, the Discord team confirmed that HiAnime would not be returning. In a statement to its community, the team explained that staff and administrators had spent the intervening period attempting to contact the website’s operators through every available channel, including discussions surrounding a possible rebranding. The team ultimately concluded that the website had ceased operations permanently, stating, “As such, we have now concluded that the website shall not be returning and has ceased operations permanently.”
AnimeFLV has been a target for anti-piracy organizations for a long time. It is believed that the website was established in 2010 and has been around for about 15 years, but that does not mean it avoided problems. According to the Motion Picture Association’s Notorious Markets Report of 2026, AnimeFLV was being operated out of Peru, Chile, and Mexico. Over the years, AnimeFLV faced several issues that showed how difficult it was becoming for large piracy websites to continue operating.
For example, in 2019, the website came under increasing pressure and announced that it would begin removing licensed content from platforms such as Crunchyroll. The move was an attempt to show that the website was being steered toward more legal avenues and to avoid hosting content that was already officially available through licensed streaming services. However, this did not stop AnimeFLV from continuing to operate as a piracy website. Between July 2023 and July 2024, the site received more than 1.46 billion visits and was also flagged as a notorious market in submissions to the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) in the following years. Despite the growing pressure, AnimeFLV continued to operate for years. It was not until April 2026 that the website faced one of its biggest problems, when its backend infrastructure was knocked offline, along with many other piracy websites that were linked to MegaCloud and VidCloud, which acted as a hosting platform for these streaming websites. AnimeFLV was able to recover from the problem, but only temporarily. Around the same time, other major piracy websites were also disappearing. HiAnime and AnimeKai were both shut down, adding to the growing number of major anime piracy platforms that were no longer available. With several of the biggest names in anime piracy facing problems at the same time, AnimeFLV was operating in an increasingly difficult environment.
However, it is not clear whether these problems were directly connected to AnimeFLV.net eventually going dark. There has been no confirmation that the technical issues or the shutdowns of other major piracy websites or the arrests of HiAnime operators in Vietnam were the reason AnimeFLV stopped operating. The website continued to function after recovering from the earlier problems, making it difficult to say exactly what caused its eventual shutdown.
