Well, just as we were all sitting down for a trailer, Nintendo had different ideas. Rather than get a good look at the upcoming Zelda movie, we instead just got a title drop.
Better yet, the title drop is that there is no title. I'm being serious. In our first Zelda Direct announcement, we were told that The Legend of Zelda movie is officially called The Legend of Zelda. Apparently, this will make sense once we've seen the film ourselves.
"Once you've seen the film, you'll understand why there is no subtitle," Shigeru Miyamoto told us at today's Direct. "This is an original film based on the many stories, ideas, and concepts of the series, built up through the games for 40 years."
He then tells us that there will be more details to share at "a later time", so there's still no word on when we're getting the first trailer. The title drop didn't even give us a peek at any of the characters or any new shots from the film. That is despite the premiere date fast approaching, as The Legend of Zelda is set to hit theatres on April 30, 2027. If anything, the Zelda movie's spot in the Direct just served to give us more questions, as we're invited to wonder what part the Triforce will play in the story.
However, I suppose we can glean some information from what Miyamoto told us here. For starters, the lack of subtitles and the explanation we have for that would suggest that the film is looking to borrow from every part of the Zelda timeline, rather than just adapt one particular game or era. I would say that suggests we're getting a totally original Zelda story, but if that were the case, I would almost expect a subtitle, so I would expect some familiar story beats and concepts.
Of course, there's a good chance that the real reason is that going subtitle-less just sells better. Indeed, most of us will just keep calling it "The Zelda Movie" anyway, even if they had given it a lengthy, original title. This way, more casual audience members won't feel that they need to do their homework before going to watch it.
In any case, this made for quite a funny start to the Zelda Direct. The news is that there is no news. We probably should have seen that coming. At least we got plenty of details on the upcoming Ocarina of Time remake.
