During the latest Nintendo Direct, Mario Kart World announced a brand-new update heading to the game later today. This entirely free update will bring an array of new courses to Mario Kart World, along with two new routes for the racing game's Knockout Tour mode.
Released alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 in June of last year, Mario Kart World received a relatively warm reception from critics. Though it didn't exceed expectations, Mario Kart World still offered an extremely polished, enjoyable kart racing experience, and its Top Critic Average score of 87 on OpenCritic goes to show what critics generally thought of the flagship Switch 2 launch title. Since its launch over a year ago, Mario Kart World has received 11 free updates, many of which added new modes, tweaked mechanics, and provided a bevy of bug fixes and general improvements. Today, Mario Kart World is getting its 12th post-launch update.
Later today, Mario Kart World is getting its free Ver1.8.0 update. The main attraction of this new content drop is a handful of new courses inspired by the original Super Mario Kart for the SNES. Available only in Mario Kart World's VS Race Mode, these 10 classic courses will take players to Choco Island, Ghost Valley, Vanilla Lake, and more iconic locations from the series' very first entry. A neat detail of these classic courses is that they also include "?" panels on the floor that grant players items when they drive over them.
Two new Knockout Tour courses are also coming to Mario Kart World with this new update. These new Knockout Tour courses are called the Propeller Rally and the Turnip Rally, and both will see players attempting to stay ahead of the pack on four consecutive tracks.

The official Nintendo patch notes for Mario Kart World's latest update shed some more light on the other features included but not detailed in the Nintendo Direct reveal trailer. Some of the most notable additions and tweaks in this Ver1.8.0 update include the ability for up to 26 players to join a room in both Online and LAN play, and the ability to swap to Spectator Mode when playing in an Online or LAN room.
An assortment of balance tweaks have also made their way to Mario Kart World in this most recent update. Green shells, fireballs, ice balls, and boomerangs will now bounce off walls fewer times. The time it takes to return to normal after being crushed by a Thwomp has been reduced. The probability of obtaining certain items in Knockout Tour has been adjusted. And guidance buoys have been added to the track leading from Acorn Heights and Dry Bones Burnout to Boo Cinema. Of course, this latest Mario Kart World update has also brought a round of bug fixes and technical improvements to the racing game.
