Blizzard MOBA Heroes of the Storm is officially getting a new character in the near future, welcoming the addition of World of Warcraft antagonist Xal'atath. The new Heroes of the Storm character is the first addition to the game's roster in nearly six years.
The popular MOBA from Blizzard originally debuted in 2015 as the developer's answer to the growing popularity of games like League of Legends and Dota 2. Heroes of the Storm draws from the rich history of the studio for its sizable roster, pulling iconic characters from games like World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch. While the game saw significant popularity in its heyday, Blizzard has largely winded down support for the game, with Heroes of the Storm's last new character coming nearly six years ago in World of Warcraft's Hogger. Now, Blizzard is bringing World of Warcraft's newest antagonist to the MOBA.
Blizzard officially revealed Xal'atath as the newest character coming to Heroes of the Storm during BlizzCon 2026. The reveal trailer for the World of Warcraft antagonist featured an amusing video of Diablo antagonist Leoric in a janitor skin, cleaning up Heroes of the Storm's battlefield and reminiscing about defeating various Heroes. The teaser showcases Xal'atath appearing before Leoric, causing him to revert to his form as the Skeleton King before the two square off. Xal'atath is scheduled to be added to Heroes of the Storm on September 28, with fans able to pre-purchase the newest Hero following the conclusion of the BlizzCon presentation.
Xal'atath's introduction to Heroes of the Storm comes after the character has become cemented in World of Warcraft lore. Xal'atath was first mentioned in World of Warcraft in 2016's Legion expansion, introduced as Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire, an artifact used by shadow priests. Xal'atath was later given a physical form in the Battle for Azeroth expansion, growing into the game's biggest current antagonist throughout expansions like Dragonflight, The War Within, and World of Warcraft's recent Midnight expansion.

Xal'atath looks to be a breath of fresh air for Heroes of the Storm, injecting some much-needed life into the MOBA. As previously mentioned, Xal'atath debuts as the first new character added to the game in more than half a decade, with recent updates largely coming in the form of balance changes and bug fixes. The launch of World of Warcraft: Midnight in early 2026 granted exclusive cosmetics for Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm, adding a special Crimson War Bear mount to the MOBA. Heroes of the Storm also celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2025, running a special event that made every Hero in the game free-to-play for a limited time.
BlizzCon 2026 was filled with exciting announcements for fans of the developer's many major franchises. Blizzard confirmed that a new Diablo animated series is in development in collaboration with Netflix, alongside the announcement of the long-awaited Diablo 5. Starcraft was the subject of some of the biggest rumors heading into BlizzCon, with Blizzard officially revealing that Starcraft will return with a brand-new first-person shooter, led by former Far Cry director Dan Hay.
