Marvel’s Wolverine has been subject to some of the fiercest scrutiny I’ve seen since The Last of Us 2, and days away from the game’s release, it ain’t going away.
The release’s launch trailer showed a brief glimpse of previously announced villain Lady Deathstrike wielding a purple katana, which somehow sparked controversy among fans mistaking her for seasoned X-Men character Psylocke.
It’s worth noting that the trailer does go on to show Lady Deathstrike attacking Logan with her distinctive finger claws, and while her design does deviate slightly from the comic books, she’s still clearly got her trademark shoulder pads.
Perhaps spotting the confusion on social media, Insomniac uploaded a short video clip clarifying the name of the character being depicted. That’s led to further criticism from some, who argue the design is so generic the studio has been forced to come out and comment on it.
If I’m going to be charitable, I do think the purple energy sword is throwing fans for a loop here, as obviously that’s not a weapon typically associated with Lady Deathstrike.
But we don’t know the exact nature of the narrative yet, and it’s always worth remembering that Insomniac is offering its own spin on the lore here – it doesn’t necessarily need to be identical to what you’ve read in the comics.
Personally, I think there’s quite a bit of grifting going on in all this, but I’m still not sure I fully understand why Insomniac has become a target. I know some people didn’t like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but it’s still generally considered a good game.
I suspect some aren’t happy with the Burbank studio’s character art, which I partially agree with. That said, I don’t think Lady Deathstrike looks so dramatically different from the comics that this design is utterly egregious – it just looks like they’ve aged her up a bit, presumably to match her real-life actress.
