Fable creator Peter Molyneux seems pensively excited about Playground Games' highly anticipated reboot, even if he wasn't sure at first.

Fable is, perhaps, the most-anticipated videogame out there behind GTA 6. The last mainline entry was 2010's Fable 3 (the '2010' caused me an impressive amount of psychic damage), and while we've had the likes of The Journey for the Kinect and Anniversary, the franchise has been pretty quiet. But there's still a market for Fable: perhaps even moreso after the success of other high fantasy titles like Baldur's Gate 3. The pressure on Playground Games is absolutely immense. I can't say I envy them.

The last time I spoke to Peter Molyneux, former Lionhead boss and now Creative Director at 22cans, he seemed pensively excited for Playground's Fable. Since then, we've seen 30 minutes of gameplay footage, as well as a few new cast members, including Hayley Atwell (of Captain America fame among others), Matt King (Peep Show), and Natasia Demetriou (Nadja from the ever-iconic What We Do in the Shadows). Several months on from our last chat, I ask how he feels now.

"It makes me immensely proud that a game that I loved to be involved with is continuing; that's my first, overwhelming emotion," he tells me. "I really have loved watching how their game has evolved. The first Richard Ayoade video that I saw with Jack and the Beanstalk; I was a little bit worried about it, it seemed a little too fairytale-ish. But I'm very encouraged by their latest gameplay videos. They're keeping a lot of what made Fable different and special. Still curious about the alignment system, and how that visually affects the world, but I'm going to be first in the line to play it; I can assure you of that."

I make reference to a conversation I had back in 2025 with Dragon Age's former lead writer, David Gaider, who has steered away from playing Bioware's latest entry in the series, Veilguard, because "it's hard to see." Molyneux describes that idea as "interesting."

"I agree with that," he says. "I end up playing whichever game I'm making hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of times. So, in one way, this version of Fable will be the first Fable I've really played as a gamer. And that's going to be absolutely fascinating to play. I can't wait."

As someone who grew up playing Fable, I'm pensively excited about what Playground is doing. Albion has the look and feel of the previous games (I'd argue it could be a bit dirtier), and the balance of humor feels pretty true to form. I just hope that it manages to capture the magic of Lionhead's titles - something that won't be easy.

If you're interested in heading to a different Albion, Molyneux's latest game, Masters of Albion, merges classic Black and White-style god gameplay with Fable-lite RPG elements. Its '2.0' update, New Beginnings, is live now, and I chatted to Molyneux about what to expect.
