Finishing all five islands and taking down their bosses is no easy task, but How to Fish has plenty of achievements for players who want something extra to work toward. One of the trickier ones is Handyman, which asks you to defeat the final boss using only your bare hands. It sounds almost impossible at first, but there’s a simple trick that makes it much easier. Here’s how to complete the Handyman achievement in How to Fish.
To get the Handyman achievement, you first need to reach Volcano, the fifth and final How to Fish island. Once you get there, talk to the scientist NPC wearing the yellow outfit. He will ask you to catch a whale, but you’ll need to bring him five fish first. Catch five fish and give them to him, and he will give you a Fish Bucket. You can use this as bait to catch the Bowhead Whale, which is the first boss on the final island.
Use any powerful weapon to beat the Bowhead Whale. Once you kill it, you should pick up its body and take it to the mouth of the volcano at the top of the mountain. Drop it there, and the Mutated Bowhead Whale will spawn. This is the boss you need to defeat with your bare hands to unlock the Handyman achievement.
Once the Mutated Bowhead Whale spawns, go back down the hill as quickly as you can. It will chase you, so be careful. There’s an important trick that makes this achievement much easier. You don’t actually have to fight the boss entirely with your fists. You can use a weapon to damage it throughout the fight, but the final hit must be dealt with your bare hands.
This means you can use any weapon to reduce its health. I recommend the Assault Rifle, as it deals plenty of damage. From my experience, it feels like one of the strongest weapons in the game. You can also equip attachments such as the Compensator and Red Dot Sight.
The Mutated Bowhead Whale releases lava, so make sure to dodge it.
One useful tip is to run away whenever the Mutated Bowhead Whale goes high into the air. Its normal attacks are not too difficult to handle, and you can keep shooting it from a distance without much trouble. However, when it jumps into the air, stop shooting and start running.
Once it loses around half of its HP, things change a little. The whale will start bouncing three times after jumping into the air, but this doesn't make the fight too much harder. Keep your distance and continue shooting whenever you get a chance. When its HP gets low, you should switch to your fists. From this point on, only move toward the whale after it finishes its third bounce. Get in a few punches, then run away before it can attack again.
