Square Enix has announced that the physical version of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will need an extra download before it can be played.
The physical PlayStation versions of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth each game on two discs, containing all the game data (as it stood at launch, before updates).
For the third game in the series, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Square Enix is instead releasing the game on a single disc or cartridge on all formats, requiring a further download before it can be played.
For both the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game, Square Enix’s disclaimer reads: “An internet connection is required to download additional game data in order to play the physical version of the game.”
It’s not known yet whether this means the disc will contain at least some of the game and the connection is required to download the rest, or whether the disc will contain little more than an ‘unlock’ and the entire game will have to be downloaded.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version, meanwhile, will be a Game-Key Card like the previous two entries, which means the entire game will have to be downloaded on Nintendo‘s console.
Square Enix has advised that the Switch 2 version will require 130 GB of storage space, but the size of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions has yet to be confirmed.
Given that PS5 discs can hold a maximum of 100 GB, this means Revelation would have required at least two discs (like its predecessors) had Square Enix opted to put the entire game on the discs like before. Instead, the physical edition will only have a single disc.
