In a surprise announcement, Destiny 2 developers Bungie have announced that they are 'not done with Destiny', and confirms previously vaulted content will now return to the space FPS, after fans hit back against the game receiving its supposed final content update earlier this year.
When Bungie released the 'Moment of Triumph' update for Destiny 2 back in June, it looked like the final chapter for Destiny 2, with the studio announcing that it was ending content updates for its sci-fi shooter. Now, a new announcement from Bungie has dramatically changed that picture, and the future of the Destiny franchise potentially looks far brighter than it did just a few months ago.
That apparent final update arrived just months after Bungie launched its newest game, Marathon. Marathon's extraction shooter format made it clear it was never a direct successor to Destiny 2, but even so, that timing left many feeling like Bungie were refocusing their efforts to the new project and leaving Destiny behind. Bungie has addressed that feeling directly in its new statement, noting that Marathon 'was never intended to replace Destiny'.
Alongside that clarification, Bungie has also announced that it will restore vaulted content that has disappeared from Destiny 2 over the years, including campaigns, raids, and destinations. The vaulting of older content has always been controversial in the game's history, but part of the original idea for vaulting content was to keep the total file size of Destiny 2 down, so it's yet to be seen how that issue will be addressed.
That unvaulting won't happen overnight though, with more details to be shared in the months ahead. Much of the vaulted content comes from older builds of Destiny 2, which differ considerably in terms of gameplay mechanics and some graphical features. Bringing these pieces of content back will therefore require a fair amount of reworking.
The announcement stopped short of confirming whether new expansion packs will come to Destiny 2, or whether Destiny 3 is a possibility further down the line. However, the announcement strongly hints that either outcome, or both, could be on the cards. Whatever happens next, it's a promising step for Destiny 2 fans.
