It has been more than two months since PlayStation hit users with the double whammy that its games won’t be released on discs after 2027, and its PS3 and PS Vita storefronts are shutting down. RPCS3 has good news on both fronts, as it has just announced an update to its emulator that will let you play physical PS3 games on your PC.
RPCS3 is a popular PS3 emulator that lets you play PS3 games on your PC. It has existed in that capacity for a while. What it hasn’t been able to let you do until now, since I can’t imagine this was a function many thought was even possible, is provide a method through emulation that enables the Blu-ray player in your PC to read, run, and play physical PS3 games.
“You can now play your PS3 games on PC, directly from your disc drive,” RPCS3 proudly exclaimed on Twitter. “Owning your games as physical media allows you to play games released as far back as 20 years ago without relying on any servers.” You will, naturally, need a PC with a disc drive, or you’re going to have to buy an external one if you want to make use of this new feature. RPCS3 has provided a list of compatible disc drives.
If you have any queries or concerns regarding how this sorcery works, RPCS3 has been answering pretty much every reply to the original post, at least the ones in which users have asked questions. That includes confirmation that, despite the “plug and play” statement in the announcement, there is one relatively simple step you will need to take when inserting a PS3 disc into your PC for the first time.
“You still need to provide the disc's decryption key to the emulator by placing it on data/redump,” an RPCS3 reply reads. So not exactly plug and play, but it won’t be long until you’re playing physical PS3 games on PC after you insert a disc for the first time. You won’t need to repeat the step with that game after this either.
As PlayStation maintains radio silence regarding its recent controversial decisions surrounding discs and store closures, the community is working harder than ever to find workarounds. RPCS3’s efforts to make physical PS3 games playable on PC were likely spurred on by the end of physical PlayStation releases as we know them, coupled with the PS3 store closure announcement. Another group has made a lot of progress in PS5 emulation since that tandem bombshell was dropped, again, almost certainly working harder and faster because of what PlayStation has planned.
