Hideo Kojima has said he would “like to remain focused on creating games,” as the Metal Gear and Death Stranding director celebrates his 63rd birthday.
In a post on social media, Kojima reflected on his time working on games, writing, “I turned 63. As I get older, the things I ‘have to do’ and the things I ‘want to do’ continue to increase.
“At the same time, the time I ‘have to do them’ continues to decrease. I constantly need to reassess how I use my time and how I live my life. That said, once you’ve taken something on, you can’t simply put it down and walk away.”
Kojima also noted that his 63rd birthday marks his 40th year working in the video game industry, and 10 years since Kojima Productions was founded. Before Kojima Productions, Hideo Kojima made his name helming the Metal Gear Solid series.
However, it was his work on Death Stranding and connections with famous Hollywood faces that catapulted Kojima to prominence in the last decade. In that time, many have suggested that the director may look to move away from games and work on other projects.
“While I continue to receive various opportunities and offers, I would like to remain focused on creating games,” Kojima said.
Kojima’s next game is the mysterious horror title OD, which Microsoft Game Studios is publishing. Last shown at a Kojima Productions event last September, OD is described as a completely new gaming experience. Kojima is collaborating with movie director Jordan Peele on OD, which stars Hunter Schafer, Udo Kier, and Sophia Lillis.
Following that, Kojima plans to release Physint, which will see Kojima return to his stealth roots. Kojima Productions and Sony Interactive Entertainment first announced Physint, which is described as a “brand-new, original IP” and a “next-generation action espionage game”, in 2024.
