Reviewing a legacy game is what I consider one of the most mystifying tasks. Recently, some decades-old games are getting an enhanced version for contemporary platforms, but with so few changes that the experience is practically the same. At the time of their original release, they were glorious, sometimes innovative, and certainly groundbreaking, but nowadays? Gameplay-wise, they are bare-bones at best.

Take, for instance, the first-ever Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy I Pixel Remaster offered a few quality-of-life additions with its release, but at its core, it's still a pretty straightforward, no-frills experience that can't hold a candle to other Final Fantasy entries, even those that also came in the Pixel Remaster collection, and that's understandable. However, it has massive cultural and historical importance, because it not only shaped the entire JRPG industry, but also gave us one of the best and longest-lasting franchises ever.

If a legacy game is released in the present day with enhanced visuals and some streamlined changes, while keeping the core gameplay intact, should we welcome complaints or be grateful to revisit a rare gem from the past? That's exactly my case with Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-. It's an emblematic title that shaped the Japanese industry, but it never received the laurels it deserved worldwide (largely because it was Japan-exclusive), including from the Dragon Quest and JRPG fanbase.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is the first game of the Mystery Dungeon subseries and also the first roguelike game ever to be developed in Japan — others tried, but Torneko's Mystery Dungeon is considered the best representation of the genre. Heavy is the crown. As I played, I quickly understood it offered a simple experience, lacking even, but that's exactly what it set out to do 33 years ago, and still does today. If I wanted more, I would better play any modern Mystery Dungeon instead of its proverbial ancestor.

Will you have a good time playing Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon? Maybe. Maybe not. The gameplay loop is overly repetitive, even by roguelike standards, and the story is just a backdrop that doesn't even tie into the lore of Dragon Quest IV that intimately. Still, I caught myself replaying it over and over, thinking "just one more try," borderline addicted. If you want to know the origin of Mystery Dungeon, need an entry point to the genre, or are just in the feel for simple and mindless fun (albeit quite hard), then perhaps you should give this title a go.
