Fans have speculated since the end of Resident Evil 4 and Separate Ways that Capcom was gearing up to remake Resident Evil 5, and those theories only strengthened when Veronica was announced.
Leakers poured cold water on the idea again and again, but when Requiem executive producer Jun Takeuchi recently teased that the "remake series will catch up with the era of the numbered titles," speculation reignited. Many took his comments as outright confirmation that RE5 and RE6 remakes are in development. They're not.
As per reputable leaker Dusk Golem, who has a proven track record leaking key details from both Requiem and the Code Veronica remake, Capcom does not have a Resident Evil 5 remake in development.
"I think Resident Evil 5 will happen eventually, but it's not happening now as of a few months ago," he explained. "They greenlit a few RE projects a few months ago. None of them were RE5, & to my knowledge, all the team's hands are full with other projects for any possibility for this to be true, unless like some project got scrapped in half a year and replaced with this for some reason, which I find incredibly unlikely with the things I've heard.
"It's not hard to guess when this is an eventuality. Various people will try to push fake rumors since it's an 'obvious' eventuality, but the when and who is super important to this discourse," he continued. "I promise you there's not an RE5 or RE6 Remake releasing in the next 5 years at least."
Resident Evil 5 and 6 will likely get remade at some point in the future, but Dusk Golem claims that RE0 and the original Resident Evil will follow Veronica.
The theories went that RE4 was teasing Wesker's return and that Veronica would establish his rivalry with Chris Redfield, but it's worth considering that Resident Evil endings rarely lead to anything. Both RE2 and RE3 set up a confrontation with Umbrella, only for the company to go under off-screen.
If anything, it appears that Capcom is leaving Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 until last, now tackling spin-offs and earlier games. We can only speculate on why that is, but RE5 and RE6 are easily among the most divisive entries in the series, with RE5 often drawing flak for its racist caricatures of African people, while RE6 is a jumbled mess of three intersecting campaigns.
