While the quest to defeat evil is an ongoing one in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, it can be a bit exhausting being a hero all the time. Sometimes, the thought of clearing a goblin cave or slaying a dragon would perhaps be better if you'd had a few drinks. If that's the case, pull up a seat, weary traveler, as I may have just the game for you.
This past year, Dotemu invited me to take a look at a rather large slate of their upcoming projects. There was a refreshing variety of unique titles, each with their own compelling systems and characters, but one that caught my attention quickly was Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern.
Best described as a fantasy inn simulator, I recently had the chance to go hands-on with the latest build of Long Rest Tavern. Though I'm something of a novice when it comes to the world of tabletop role-playing games, having briefly sat in on one several years ago, you really don't need to have any knowledge of D&D to get sucked into this easy-going look at the somewhat less stressful side of being a hero.
Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern is set within its own, confined universe of D&D. You can clearly tell that the team is pulling from numerous editions, but it's all part of one big celebration of the long-running tabletop game. There's an obvious love for the material from the developers, which they put front and center at every opportunity.
Even in the build I played, which is far from finished, there was quite a bit of content to get into. You come to understand the game's objectives and systems rather quickly, as you're introduced to a jovial guide that helps you along the way. Once you've named your tavern and made use of the game's surprisingly impressive character creator, you're ready to jump in and start building it up.

Buying and placing equipment in your tavern is a breeze, with snappy, responsive controls and an intuitive inventory system. Once I got into the groove, it was fun to zip around and place things as I saw fit. As I got my tavern ready to go, which culminated in me hiring staff and getting my first order of ale, the game's charm really went into overdrive.
