Some of the stranger items in Grand Theft Auto 6’s divisive $400 collector’s edition are actually referencing and remaking some rare Rockstar merch.
Considering GTA 6 is unarguably the biggest game of all time and has been being waited ever since it was confirmed nearly five years ago, it’s no surprise that fans were begging for a collector’s edition to mark the occasion. The lack of a physical release initially made that look unlikely, until Rockstar showed just how much merch the game was going to get.
Following a store leak that gave everyone a bit of hope, the calls for a collector’s edition were finally granted earlier this week with the Vice City Collection. Only, fans weren’t impressed with the $400 price tag, lack of an actual copy of the game, and the strange selection of items included. As it turns out, some of those items have a nice bit of history to them.
Ever since the GTA 6 collector’s edition was announced, I’ve seen a lot of confusion about the items that have been included. As highlighted by Twitter user GTASeries, a few pieces of the merch are actually clear references to Rockstar’s history, particularly for a few rare items tied to previous GTA games.
For example, the Macca the Gator mirror is actually a recreation of a mirror that was gifted to Rockstar developers at Vice City’s 80s-themed launch party. Speaking of Vice City, there’s also the razor blade keychain, which is a nod to a promo item with a similar design that was handed out alongside that game’s launch.
The final item in the collector’s edition that seems to be clearly referencing a bit of Rockstar history is the “swizzle spoon”, which is reminiscent of the 14K gold-plated spoon that Rockstar developers received during the GTA 4: The Ballad of Gay Tony launch party back in 2009. Of course, this one is silver and themed around Vice City, but still.
I hopefully don’t need to tell you what these three are meant to be used for, and how they’re a bit of a package deal.
Considering these items were all given out to developers at launch parties or around the time of a previous GTA’s release, they’re all pretty rare bits of merchandise that can fetch a hefty sum. Even if I’m sure it won’t be enough to justify the high price of the GTA 6 collector’s edition, it is nice that some thought has gone into them all.
