One of Geralt’s most brutal weapons is a hooked silver chain, featured in both the novels and the opening cinematic for the 2007 original Witcher game, but it has never appeared in CDPR's trilogy. Until now.
The Witcher 3’s upcoming expansion, Songs of the Past, finally lets Geralt channel his inner Scorpion, but why did it take so long to finally give him the hook? In a new interview with BBC News (via GamesRadar+), game director Jakob Rokosz said that it simply wasn’t possible ten years ago.
“We were talking about implementing the chain even during the original The Witcher 3,” Rokosz revealed. “It was impossible to do at the time for various technological reasons and challenges. A few things had to click together, and we were able to address those challenges and issues during the remaster, so then we were able to implement a weapon that feels just natural and very fluid.”
Rokosv didn’t go into further detail on what exactly those technological reasons and challenges were, but senior quest designer Despoina Anetaki teased that it’s not just a cool new weapon for Geralt’s arsenal. It opens up a whole new side of combat, perfect for those “who might be sick of the crossbow by now.”
“It fits with the narrative theming of the Songs of the Past,” she said. “It fits with all the new enemies that work with the chain. We were able to do crowd control with the swarmions, that swarm you and you have to keep them away from you.”
Granted, my 600+ hours in The Witcher 3 were mostly spent with Geralt hobbling from town to town, enjoying a night in the inn, and robbing the local villagers of their most prized Gwent cards. But a fresh way to experience the game all these years later is more than welcome. And for an expansion titled “Songs of the Past,” it feels especially fitting that CDPR would finally revisit one of Geralt’s more iconic weapons and find a way to make it work before passing the torch to Ciri.
