BlizzCon 2026 is well underway, with massive news drops for upcoming releases for Diablo and StarCraft. Blizzard hasn't forgotten about the hero shooter mainstay that has helped keep the lights on. Overwatch has had some hiccups over its lifetime, but the game is currently at one of its strongest points ever, and Blizzard is looking to maintain that tempo.
Announced at BlizzCon, Overwatch's Season 5 is about to begin, with a myriad of new toys, reworked classics, and a thank-you gift for all. Players at home can participate in the newest Hero Trial, while the lucky folks at BlizzCon get to play with Sombra's Support-flavored rework and the new Watchpoint map coming soon.
Starting from the top, the biggest Overwatch announcement at BlizzCon by far is the inclusion of the 55th hero to join Overwatch's roster: Doctrine.
Doctrine is an aggressive manipulator support, capable of piercing allies and enemies, summoning bat drones for combat stims, and capping the enemy's max HP with his terrifying ultimate.
Using his Infuse mechanic, Doctrine has to carefully decide when to pump up his abilities, giving them enhanced effects for a limited time. Ever the playmaker, Doctrine's perks heavily alter his feel, allowing him to sacrifice max HP for extra healing, or letting him earn faster Infuse charges for dealing damage. While locked from Ranked for now, Doctrine is primed to be a massive boon to supports who prefer to play proactively.
Support players who like to make plays got another gift promised on the horizon: a support rework for Sombra. Sombra, famously, has always struggled to find a niche in Overwatch that made her both viable and satisfying to play against. When she was good, she was maddening, and when she felt fair, she was awful. Blizzard is attempting to shift her role to see how she performs, though details are vague at this time.
Roadhog is also getting a rework aiming at minimizing frustration, though specifics are even sparser. All we know is that Blizzard is eliminating the Junker's 1-Shot capability, the biggest pain point for many when taking him on. Blizzard has attempted reworks with Roadhog before to slight success, though I'm hoping we see him get a bit better at tank dueling in exchange for losing his burst.
Overwatch is getting a new Escort map at the start of Season 5 as well, a second Watchpoint map called Grímsvötn. This Icelandic prison was used to house Doctrine prior to his breakout in the season cinematic. In celebration, Doomfist will be getting a new design representing his new status quo in the story, and all players can earn a Mythic Ticket!
