As the JRPG library of the original PlayStation expanded, that ultimately paved the way for the industry's favorite thing in the entire world. That being sequels, a chance to do the thing that made you a lot of money again in hopes of making more money.
Sometimes, perhaps more often than not, a sequel may fall flat or feel like a cash grab. Worse yet, it sometimes feels like both. In certain cases, however, the sequels to PS1 JRPGs were just as good, if not better, than their predecessors.
Looking back at the PS1 JRPG library, I'm always blown away by how many genuinely great games in that genre premiered on the console. I'm also even more surprised by how many of them had truly fantastic sequels, and I believe many of these managed to outshine their previous efforts.
As far as PS1 JRPGs go, I find it quite sad that so few people have either played, or seem to know of, Jade Cocoon: Story of the Tamamayu. It is one of the most visually appealing, genuinely brilliant JRPGs that you can find on the console.
The pre-rendered backgrounds are phenomenal, and it has some of the most fluid animations I've ever seen for a PS1 game. Combat is also a highlight, and it has some absolutely amazing music. All these elements would be turned up to the maximum when a sequel was released for the PS2 three years later.
Jade Cocoon 2 features much sharper, more compelling combat and a fun world that's filled with some delightfully charming NPCs. As far as PS2 JRPGs go, Jade Cocoon 2 is one of the console's most woefully underrated titles. Sadly, we haven't heard from the series since, as it has been without a release for over twenty years.
The list of great games that Konami made for the PS1 often feels unlimited. It wasn't all about Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid, however, as they also developed one of the console's most incredible JRPGs.
