Fortnite just shared a new trailer for its upcoming Fortnitemares event. The in-game event takes place every Halloween, and this year, it will coincide with Fortnite's ongoing Override gaming season. In its new trailer, one of the most welcome surprises of the season so far was revealed out of nowhere - Hollow Knight is coming to Fortnite.
The relatively short Fortnitemares trailer largely focuses on the likes of Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street, and what appears to be a maskless version of Predator coming to the game. However, there's a brief moment where the nameless Knight from the original Hollow Knight is shown sitting on a bench next to OG Fortnite character, Guff. The screen flashes to show the Shade version of The Knight, implying both variants will be available when the character is added to the game.
The Knight appears to be a sidekick, a still relatively new mechanic that has come in pretty handy for adding characters that their creators might not want holding a gun. Sidekicks are smaller and follow you around as you play the game. If that is what The Knight is going to be, then they join a group that already includes SpongeBob SquarePants, Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog, and Rush from Mega Man.
What doesn't come across in the one shot we're shown of the Hollow Knight sidekick is how the character is going to look in three dimensions. The Knight hasn't been in a game outside of Team Cherry's incredibly popular metroidvania, which is entirely 2D. The Knight's Fortnite design might look identical to how it is in the game in which they are the star, but adding them to Fortnite is going to mean we see the iconic character from a whole new perspective.
Fortnite leakers have already been parsing through updates and revealed that Fortnite's Hollow Knight crossover will be more than just a sidekick. The leaks claim that the Shade version of the sidekick is a style, which should mean it doesn't need to be bought separately, and that a Hollow Knight-themed backbling and pickaxe will also be added to the game. I don't think I'm making too much of a stretch by assuming the pickaxe will either be The Knight's nail or Hornet's needle from Hollow Knight: Silksong.
This year's Fortnitemares is shaping up to be the biggest yet thanks to Override. A Five Nights at Freddy's crossover has already been confirmed for the event, and its reveal is the most-liked post in Fortnite history. It dethroned the Dragon Ball Z crossover reveal that had held onto the record since 2022.
