It’s shaping up to be a particularly big quarter for Sony Pictures, following the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. (Now the highest-grossing movie of all time in North America.)
The firm’s new Resident Evil movie – directed by Zach Cregger – has blown past all expectations, collecting $60 million at the Box Office domestically.
That’s more than double Resident Evil: Afterlife, the franchise’s previous front-runner, which managed a $26 million opening in 2010 – not adjusted for inflation.
The new film did even better globally, taking $108.3 million internationally on a $75 million budget. Even accounting for marketing, this should stroll to profitability for Sony when all’s said and done.
It’s also worth noting that this is Cregger’s biggest Box Office opening as well, although that’s not an enormous surprise given his rising profile and the reach of the Resident Evil brand overall.
