Silent Hill: Townfall was one of the most talked-about moments at Opening Night Live this year – and when 5,000 people in a room applaud a horror game trailer in unison, you understand why the team behind it described the moment as surreal. The game launches September 24 on PS5 and PC, and at gamescom 2026, I sat down with Jon McKellan, writer and director at Screen Burn Interactive, and Motoi Okamoto, Silent Hill Series Producer at KONAMI, to talk through the design decisions behind one of the most anticipated horror games of the year.
The cast revealed at Opening Night Live – Jovan Adepo as protagonist Simon, Kezia Burrows as Zoe, and Terry O'Quinn as Richard – generated significant excitement. The giant something roaming the fog-shrouded streets of a Scottish town didn't exactly hurt either.
The relief in McKellan's voice when talking about the reception is palpable. "It was very surreal for us to have worked on the game for so long and to then finally get to see the reactions," he told me. "You're always nervous when it comes to these. But the reaction, to watch the trailer live, hearing 5,000 people applaud was something else."
Screen Burn is a small team, and Townfall took longer to deliver than initially expected – something Motoi Okamoto is frank about. "If a team needs more time to cook, they should be allowed that. We made the right call." That patience clearly paid off, and the four weeks between the gamescom reveal and the September 24 release date have been feeling less like a quiet dump and more like a team that knew they had something special in their hands. Something that builds the hype quite naturally.
One of the defining features of Townfall is the CRTV – a pocket television that replaces the iconic radio of previous Silent Hill entries – and the first-person perspective the game is built around. The two are inseparable, and McKellan explains that both were locked in from the start: "We knew we wanted to make the game in first person. That was part of the initial pitch for a couple of reasons: the CRTV itself would only ever work in first person, and the other is that we felt the exploration, the environment, the types of puzzles... they only really work if you're close."
The intimacy of the perspective isn't just a stylistic choice. Once the decision to use a screen rather than a simple radio was made, McKellan describes it as opening doors rather than closing them. "It allowed us to find new ways to tell the story, and do puzzles, enemies. It brought challenges, but also more opportunities."
