Bungie has reportedly pitched Destiny 3 to Sony a few times, but it was never approved over budget concerns. Current estimates place the development of Destiny 3 at around $500 million, which Sony may be unwilling to pay for after Bungie's poor performance since its acquisition. Marathon is getting a huge makeover with Season 3, but so far, the game is struggling to retain even a couple of thousand players on Steam.

It's unclear what Bungie has in the works now, as reports around the time of layoffs indicated the company didn't have any greenlit games, only incubation projects, instead. Of the five or six games Bungie had in development, only Project Gummy Bear survived due to being moved to another Sony studio. Marathon was published, but Destiny 3 is unlikely to see the light of day for a long time, if ever. Likewise, Sony is unlikely to change its stance on digital games despite the backlash.
