After months of rumors, reports, and speculation, XBOX has now confirmed what we reported earlier this year: they are letting people digitize physical copies of their games.
"Players have spent decades building their XBOX libraries," Jason Ronald, VP Next Generation at XBOX, said in an announcement. "Our goal is to make it easier for those libraries to move forward with players."
On Monday, August 31, XBOX Insiders will be able to transfer select XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games to a digital format. Once that transfer is complete, these games will receive all benefits of the digital format, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming. This means that, should you complete a physical-to-digital transfer, you can play those disc-based games on PC through Play Anywhere.
"Your physical game library is more than a collection of discs," said XBOX CEO Asha Sharma. "It holds years of memories and stories worth preserving. Starting next week, XBOX Insiders can unlock a digital entitlement for supported physical games. We'll start with thousands of titles and add more as we can."
First things first, in order to take part in the disc-to-digital program, you'll need to be an XBOX Insider.
When the program goes live on August 31, insert your physical XBOX game disc into a console. You'll receive a prompt that asks if you'd like to redeem a digital version of the game. That's it! That's the entire process. Once the digital license is active, you'll no longer need the disc to play the game.
