Would you be happy to simply tap your credit card onto your PlayStation controller to register a purchase of Marvel's Spider-Man 3 on the PS6?
That's the kind of thing that Sony is suggesting as it registers a patent to ship PlayStation controllers with a built-in credit scanner.
Currently, you're able to insert your bank details into the PS Store and use them to buy digital PS5, PS4 games and subscriptions — if you trust Sony enough, you can store them on their servers permanently to skip having to insert your digits every time.
This patent would allow a PlayStation controller to function like the current contactless payment systems we have in physical stores, where you only need to hold your credit card next to a machine to make the payment. The PlayStation pad would be the machine in this case.

The patent is named "Video game controller-driven information transfer", it was filed in March 2025, and was registered earlier this month.
Of course, there's absolutely no guarantee such a thing will actually turn into a feature on PS5 or the next system, as many patents never materialise into something physical. Sony says the feature could be used to purchase full games, add-ons, and virtual currency for live service games. It also poses the idea of someone buying a game via the controller after trying it at a store or expo.
