When the seasonal game droughts come to an end, especially in the fall, big-name titles tend to start dropping in our collective laps one after the other. It’s a good problem to have, as it means there’s no shortage of top-shelf gaming to go around. However, having multiple major titles launching close to each other can be a major drain on your energy and interest, and at least personally speaking, I’ve accidentally burnt myself out trying to hop between hallmark launches with no breaks in between.
Even with major releases looming, after you finish one massive, 20+ hour game, you need a period to cool off and cleanse your palate before you jump into another. This is why I appreciate having lots of smaller, indie games on standby, something with a runtime of around five hours that you can finish in a couple of sittings, or otherwise don’t need to finish to enjoy. The big games will still be there waiting for you when you’re ready, so try one of these games to wind down and reset before you go whole-hog again.
Whenever I’m feeling burnt out after finishing a large game, it’s hard to work up the energy to pick the controller back up and actually, manually play something. My brain just sort of defaults to mindlessly scrolling through YouTube videos. If you have a similar disposition, it may be ideal to try playing something that’s very show-esque, like American Arcadia.
American Arcadia is a narrative-centric platformer with some mild puzzle elements, in which hapless everyman Trevor discovers not just his life, but the lives of everyone in his city are a Truman Show-style reality show, and he’s been marked for removal for being too boring. Periodically, the perspective shifts from Trevor’s platforming antics to his lady-on-the-outside, Angela, who works in some first-person problem-solving to clear the way for him. It’s a nifty little story with some fun plot beats and setpieces, and generally doesn’t demand too much of the exhausted brain.
Some people find the best way to alleviate boredom is by spending a stack of cash on something silly. It’s maybe not the healthiest perspective one could have in life, but that’s why we have gambling video games like CloverPit. It’s all the fun of irresponsible, impulsive spending with none of the risk of sudden destitution.
