Leaks from a reliable source revealed last week that the translucent green Xbox Series X being released to celebrate the platform’s 25th anniversary will cost $899.99. Xbox has now confirmed that the leak was accurate. It really is releasing a $900 console, but it’s throwing in a free game to try and soften the blow.
Revealed on Xbox Wire, pre-orders for the Xbox Series X25 are now open for a select few “dedicated fans” who would have been sent emails on Wednesday inviting them to place their pre-orders. For everyone else, the $900 X25 will be available to pre-order through the Xbox website from 10 am EST today.
That price will not only get you the retro-style console with matching controller created as an homage to the original Xbox, but also a copy of Halo: Campaign Evolved. A code for a digital copy of the Halo remake will be thrown in to sweeten the deal, which is nice, although it feels a little like a drop in the ocean when it comes to the never-ending increases in console costs.
Even with a free copy of Halo thrown in, the Series X25 will still be the most expensive home console Xbox has ever sold. Campaign Evolved costs $49.99. Subtract the cost of the remake from the $899.99 console MSRP, and that still leaves you with $850. That’s $50 more than the most expensive Xbox currently on the market.
On the bright side, it now means the most expensive Xbox money can buy also comes with a free game, whereas the most expensive PlayStation, the PS5 Pro, which is also currently $899.99, does not. The thing is, not only is the Pro a far more powerful console, but it also has 2TB of storage, twice as much as the Series X25.
Despite all of the above, there is no doubt in my mind that by the end of today, there will be no Series X25 pre-orders left. They will all be snapped up within hours, maybe even minutes, of going live. The truly ironic part of that will be that almost everyone who wants one of these things will almost certainly already own a copy of Campaign Evolved, making its inclusion pointless. Heck, most of them will already own a regular Series X.
There is a real silver lining to all of this that I won’t then taint with a caveat. The matching translucent green controller that comes with the X25 is available to buy separately. It’s $79.99, and you can pre-order one right now, depending on where you are in the world. The controller will be released on October 20, 2026, with the X25 console shipping a little later on November 13.
